Energy & Carbon Strategy

100% renewable electricity achieved.

Scale

Outcome
100% renewable electricity
Pathways weighed
VPPA · PPA · On-site solar · Green tariffs · RECs

Decision board

Operating agreements + procurement mix · analysis

Negotiated 100% renewable electricity into the 2019 power-service agreement supporting the test tower, then selected the pathways that actually worked across the portfolio.

No single deal got us there. A mix of smaller agreements did.

100% renewable electricity achieved in 2025.

Good strategy is not proving that a preferred solution works. It is knowing when not to proceed.

Analysis & evidence

My Role

I led North American renewable-energy strategy and initiated global VPPA diligence from the North American business.

Global VPPA diligence

Initiated and led a global VPPA evaluation from North America, developing the core analysis internally before bringing in EY to help assess IFRS accounting treatment and financial-risk implications.

The work evaluated whether a long-term virtual power purchase agreement created sufficient environmental and financial value relative to its accounting, market, and balance-sheet risk. The analysis was presented to senior leadership.

Did not proceed — the financial and risk profile was greater than the benefit.

Tennessee PPA evaluation

Evaluated a physical, market-specific PPA opportunity in Tennessee: commercial terms, energy-market fit, contract risk, financial implications, and alignment with operational demand.

Did not advance — the economics and risk did not justify the transaction.

On-site solar at both factories

Led analysis of on-site solar at both major factory locations, to determine whether on-site generation could provide a practical, cost-effective pathway to renewable electricity and emissions reduction.

Not advanced — the economics did not pencil. The work was decision-making, not advocacy.

How 100% was reached

The IQC has run on 100% renewable electricity through a Cobb EMC green tariff since it opened in 2022; I negotiated renewable supply into its 2019 power-service agreement.

The rest of the North American portfolio reached 100% in 2025 through off-site renewable energy procurement.

No single deal got us there. A mix of smaller agreements did.
