Context
Saraya Bandar Jissah addressed resort development in an extreme coastal landscape of mountains, wadis, lagoons, and steep infrastructure corridors near Muscat.
MESA Design Group's role
Landscape architect for site analysis, master planning, and schematic design within a multidisciplinary international resort team.
My role
I served as the primary junior landscape architect supporting site analysis and schematic-design planning. I produced and coordinated much of the project drafting and contributed analysis used to organize the resort’s relationship to steep terrain, coastal conditions, wadis, circulation, development areas, and landscape systems. The work was completed as part of MESA Design Group’s multidisciplinary project team.
Design challenge
The terrain was not background; it was the primary organizing force. Roads, water, development pads, habitat, public space, utilities, and arrival all had to negotiate steep landform and episodic wadi systems.
Approach
The team used topographic and environmental analysis to shape circulation, land use, lagoon and island systems, wadi parks, and a hierarchy of streets and entries. Plans and sections carried the concept into implementable schematic design.
Result
The archive preserves analysis, master planning, a coordinated 100% schematic-design set, and detailed studies for lagoons, streets, entries, bridges, planting, and utilities.
Looking back
Saraya is a strong example of designing with forces that cannot be simplified away. The work succeeds when terrain, water, infrastructure, and human experience are resolved together.
